Tryout Information
TRYOUTS FOR NYBA’s 2024-2025 METROWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS
Northboro Youth Basketball Association will be holding travel team tryouts for players in grades 4-8 during various evenings from September 23rd to October 3rd. A detailed tryout schedule will be posted as soon as it's available. Mandatory registration for tryouts will open August 26th.
Tryout registration will close on September 22. Tryout fee: $25
**Players must be registered prior to tryouts - we will NOT be able to accommodate walk-ins or late registrants this year**
How are tryouts conducted?
Tryouts are conducted by independent evaluators and coordinated by age group coordinators to determine rosters for boys’ and girls’ teams at each grade level. Depending on interest/turnout and talent, boys typically have A & B teams at each grade level and girls have one team, occasionally more depending on interest at a specific grade level. Every player should plan to attend both tryouts.
Tryout Policy
Tryout dates are set dates. We select the teams at the end of the second tryout, so there is no opportunity for a "later tryout" If a player is injured or sick and can’t participate in some/all of tryouts, the evaluators will go on the information they were able to garner from the time that they saw, but a more limited sample will tend to work against the player. If an injured or sick player has played previously in any of our programs and as a result, we have sufficient knowledge of his/her skills, he/she will be eligible for a team, and we will take our prior knowledge into account when evaluating players and creating teams. This is at the discretion of the program. Our primary winter program is Northboro Rec Hoops. The rec program includes one practice and one game per week. Program coordinators and coaches work to balance the teams in each grade level, and there is no tryout, everyone is included regardless of whether they can participate in the weekend evaluations we use to create the balanced teams. The rec league provides an alternative opportunity for kids to play basketball, if the NYBA Metrowest tryouts do not result in a player being chosen for a travel team.
What happens after the first/second tryout?
Potential head coaches will be identified, based on interest and where their child falls in the first phase of evaluations. Those head coaches will be invited to watch the second tryout. They will have no impact or influence on the evaluation process. They are there as a viewer ONLY.
After the second tryout, players will be selected for each team, and coaches will be in touch shortly after rosters are posted online. As soon as roster decisions have been communicated, instructions on how to pay the 2024-2025 program fees on the NYBA website will be disseminated. Payment is due immediately upon receipt of invoice.
All travel team rosters will be finalized no later than October 14.
